Brief Bio: 

Engr. Prof. Mike Agbesi Acheampong was born on 21 October 1969 in Kumasi, Ghana. He is an Environmental/Chemical Engineer by training. He has blended this background with expertise in Environmental Biotechnology. He obtained his B.Sc. (Chemical Engineering) and M.Sc. (Water Supply and Environmental Sanitation) degrees from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi, Ghana in 1996 and 2005, respectively. In October 2013, he obtained a joint PhD degree in Environmental/Chemical Engineering from the UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education and the Wageningen University, The Netherlands.

Engr. Prof. Acheampong worked for Unilever (Ghana) Limited (1996), Nestlé (Ghana) Limited (1997 - 1998), Premier Distribution Agency and Demax investments (1998 - May 2003) before joining Kumasi Technical University (the then Kumasi Polytechnic) in May 2003 as Senior Instructor in the Department of Chemical Engineering. Through a dint of hard work and dedication to duty, he became a lecturer and Senior Lecturer in 2005 and 2011, respectively. He was promoted to the rank of Associate Professor in Environmental/Chemical Engineering in 2014.

ADMINISTRATIVE LEADERSHIP AND EXPERIENCE

  1. As the Pro Vice-Chancellor of the Kumasi Technical University, I support the Vice-Chancellor in the management of the University at all levels. Furthermore, I direct and supervise the operations of all the academic units of the University.
  2. I am the Project Leader and Research Facilitator for the Partnership for Applied Sciences (PASS) Project. The PASS project is a German Government funded capacity-building project for Kumasi and Cape Coast Technical Universities in collaboration with three German Universities of Applied Sciences (July 2017 - June 2021).
  3. I represented the Minister of Education, Hon. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, at the Ashanti regional launch of the Ghana Skill Development Initiative Programme at the Kumasi Technical Institute (2 February 2017). I delivered the Minister’s keynote address.
  4. I acted as Rector/Vice Chancellor on a number of occasions. I was responsible for the day-to-day management of the University.
  5. I represented the Vice Chancellor on a number of occasions.
  6. I represented the Rector at the Opening Ceremony of the 2016 GhIE Conference held at the Kofi Annan International Peace Keeping Training Centre, Accra (29 March 2016).

    • The Dean is the administrative head of the Faculty. The Faculty of Engineering is made up of the departments of Chemical, Civil, Electrical/Electronic and Mechanical Engineering.

    • I am in-charge of the day-to-day management of the department.

    • As the acting head, I led the design of a curriculum for a new Master of Technology in Chemical Engineering (MTech) programme.

  13. Head, Chemical Engineering Department (October 2007 - February 2009).
    • During my term of office as the Head, I lead the reorganisation of the academic programmes of the department in line with modern trend in higher education. Other notable achievements are listed below:
    • The construction of the new TALIF funded chemistry/analytical laboratory started during my time as HOD. 
    • I introduced the payment of "Laboratory Charges" by students (2008/2009 academic year) to support the department in meeting its laboratory chemicals and disposables requirements. This has become a major source of IGF for the department.
    • I implemented a strategic recruitment policy which resulted in the hiring of most of the core Lecturers, Laboratory Instructors and Technicians in the department.
    • I authored a TALIF proposal which resulted in the award of $72.000 for capacity building in the Chemical Engineering department. Under this project, the HND curriculum was reviewed and some new equipment were purchased for the department. 
    • I initiated the development of the BTech Chemical and Petrochemical Engineering curricula. The programme is accredited by the National Accreditation Board (NAB) and has been running full-time since 2013.
    • I introduced the departmental information booklet as a way of marketing the department. The booklet is a valuable source of information for Students, Lecturers and the larger community.
    • I procured two book shelves and a set of reception chairs for the office of the HOD using internally generated funds.
