Kumasi Technical University (KsTU) has successfully concluded its landmark 70th Anniversary celebrations with its memorable two-day Alumni Homecoming and Grand Durbar, drawing hundreds of alumni, dignitaries, captains of industry, staff, and students to the Asem Campus of the University.
Held under the theme “70 Years of Transformative Technical Education: Honouring Our Legacy, Shaping the Future,” the event provided a powerful platform to reflect on seven decades of impact while charting an ambitious path forward in technical education, innovation, and national development.
The celebrations kicked off on Friday, 27th March 2026, with a mammoth Homecoming that brought alumni from across Ghana and the diaspora back to their alma mater. The campus buzzed with excitement as former students reconnected with old classmates, lecturers, and friends sharing stories, reliving cherished memories, and celebrating the institution that shaped their professional journeys.
The atmosphere was electrifying, filled with laughter, traditional performances from various groups, games, and a profound sense of belonging. Many described the day as more than a reunion it was a reaffirmation that KsTU is not just an academic institution, but a lifelong family united by shared values and aspirations.
The climax was on Saturday, 28th March 2026, with a spectacular grand durbar. Alumni, staff, and students proudly donned the specially designed 70th Anniversary cloth, creating a sea of colour and unity that symbolised heritage, pride, and collective achievement.
In his welcome address, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Gabriel Dwomoh described the milestone as a defining moment in the University’s history. “We are gathered here not merely to mark seventy years of existence, but to celebrate seven decades of impact, innovation, and excellence in technical education,” he said.

Prof. Dwomoh outlined three key objectives for the celebration: honouring the visionary founders and past leaders who laid the foundation in 1954; strengthening partnerships with government and industry; and showcasing KsTU’s growing contributions to STEM education, skills development, and practical innovation.
Representing the Vice President Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, the Ashanti Regional Minister Dr. Frank Amoakohene commended KsTU for its enduring role in Ghana’s development.
“For seventy years, Kumasi Technical University has served as a beacon of practical knowledge and innovation, equipping generations of young Ghanaians with the skills needed to drive industry, entrepreneurship, and socio-economic progress,” he remarked.

Dr. Amoakohene stressed the urgent need for closer collaboration among academia, industry, and government to tackle contemporary challenges and position Ghana as a competitive player in the global technology-driven economy.
A major highlight of the Durbar was the official unveiling of “Nimdeɛ Hyiren REV” KsTU’s innovative regenerative electric vehicle (REV) developed by students and faculty in collaboration with industry partners. The vehicle incorporates advanced regenerative braking technology, enhancing energy efficiency and sustainability beyond conventional electric vehicles.
The project drew widespread acclamation as a shining example of the University’s commitment to solution-oriented research and the development of context-relevant, homegrown technologies.
Alongside the REV, KsTU showcased an impressive array of student and faculty innovations, including smart agricultural systems, drones, air quality monitoring devices, and other engineering solutions targeting real-world challenges in Ghana and beyond.

The celebrations offered a timely opportunity to trace KsTU’s remarkable evolution from its establishment in 1954 as the Kumasi Technical Institute, through its transformation into a polytechnic, to its status as one of Ghana’s leading technical universities.
As the event was about to end, Prof. Gabriel Dwomoh reaffirmed the University’s forward-looking vision, emphasising priorities in digitalisation, artificial intelligence, sustainable engineering, and deeper industry collaboration.
He expressed profound gratitude to alumni, staff, students, government representatives, traditional authorities, and industry partners for their unwavering support.
